oat groats

  • Unprocessed oats are called groats.
  • These oats have the husks removed but have not broken the outer oat kernel that locks in freshness and nutrients.
  • There are ready to be ground into flour or flaked into rolled oats.
  • Unprocessed oat groats store for a long time, much like wheat grain. Once they have been rolled or otherwise processed they must be stored in a refrigerator and consumed within a relatively short time frame.
  • Rolled oat groats are simply oat groats that have been rolled. You can purchase a small machine to do this, or you can buy them ready rolled.
  • If you buy ready rolled oat grouts make sure they have been freshly rolled, and do keep them in the refrigerator.
  • Oat groats are gluten free providing they have not been contaminated with wheat.
