  • There are over 30 species belong to the huge mint-family. The most common versions are peppermint (mentha piperita) with its dark green leaves with a reddish stem and lavender flowers, and spearmint (mentha spicata) which has lighter green, pointy leaves and pink flowers.
  • Common varieties of mint are spearmint, peppermint and apple mint.

  • Generally if you buy fresh mint from a store it will be spearmint or possibly apple mint.
  • I prefer spearmint for in salad dressings for its sharper taste, and apple mint in smoothies for its more subtle taste. Either are fine chopped up in salads.
