gynostemma (Gynostemma pentaphyllum)

  • Gynostemma is also know as southern ginseng. It does share some of the properies of ginseng, but it is not related. It is actually in the squash family and is an herbaceous vine.
  • The Chinese word for this plant is pronounced something like Jiao Gu Lan.
  • It is grown in far-off lands like China where it is a well known herb.
  • It is available in the UK as dried leaves or powder.
  • This is normally used to make a herbal tea, either on its own or with other ingredients.
  • This herb is increasingly used to keep race-horses in peak condition. I expect that have a little more than we do!
