coconut (Cocos nucifera)

  • Check carefully for any cracks. If it is cracked at all then don't buy it as it might well be bad.
  • Shake it gently to check that there is some coconut milk in it. The more milk the better.
  • Compare coconuts for weight. For two coconuts of about the same size, the heavier one is likely to be better.
  • When you come to use the coconut, the milk should smell sweet and pleasant. If it doesn't then the coconut is probably bad.
