baobab (Adansonia)

  • The baobab is a tree found in east africa, madagascar and australia.
  • There are some nine species of trees in this genus.
  • it is sometimes called the upside-down tree, because it looks a bit like it has been picked up and replanted upside down!
  • They can be very long lived plants. One has been dated at over 1,200 years old.
  • The fruits grow to end up with a hard shell reminiscent of a small coconut. Inside are the individual fruits which are dried on the tree.
